Hutton Family History & Ancestry
Let me share with you the fascinating history of your family, the Huttons. The name Hutton originated from the Old English term ‘hoh-tun,’ which means ‘promontory settlement.’ Interestingly, this name is common throughout the Old English speaking regions of Britain, including places like Somerset near Weston-super-Mare. As a result, there are various origins and branches of the Hutton surname. One notable family called De Hoton, hailing from Lancaster, is recorded as ancient and noble, having been granted arms by English heralds in the sixteenth century.
The Scottish branch of the Huttons traces its roots back to a man named Simon de Hotun, who is listed as a juror in an inquest held in Lanark in 1263. Simon, his father, or his grandfather were knightly landowners who adopted the name of their lands, and from them, all Scottish Huttons are believed to descend. The Huttons spread far and wide across Lowland Scotland, with individuals bearing the name found in Stirling, Kirkudbright, Dundee, and Fife. During the 15th century, John Hudton served as the abbot of the monastery of Coupar Angus in Fife, while two brothers named John Hutone resided in Dundee simultaneously – a common occurrence in an era marked by high infant mortality and a limited range of baptismal names.
One notable figure in your family’s history is John Hutton, a self-made man who began as a herd lad at Caerlaverock. His talents were recognized by a local clergyman, and he received education as the companion of a gentleman’s son. Later, he studied medicine in Edinburgh. When Queen Mary II had a riding accident, Hutton happened to be the closest doctor, and this led to his appointment as chief physician to William and Mary in 1692. He subsequently served Queen Anne and also became a Member of Parliament for Dumfries. Dr. Hutton claimed to represent Hutton of that Ilk and registered his own coat of arms, although the basis for this claim was questionable at best. As he had no surviving children, the title of chief eventually became extinct.
However, the most significant figure in the Hutton family, and perhaps in the entire Hutton lineage, is James Hutton, who lived from 1726 to 1797. He was a renowned geologist and philosopher during the European Enlightenment. Often referred to as the father of modern Geology, James Hutton’s groundbreaking work on rock formation, movement, and erosion completely revolutionized our understanding of the age of the Earth. His discoveries demonstrated that the Earth’s history spanned millions and millions of years, challenging previous notions. James Hutton’s contributions have had a lasting impact on the field of geology and our understanding of the world’s geological processes.
