Family Crest Motto: DEUS JUVAT (God assists)

Allow me to recount the rich tapestry of your family, the Macduffs, tracing back through time with connections to the royal Scoto-Pictish lineage, specifically through Queen Gruoch, who was wed to Macbeth. In the wake of the king’s demise, her son Lulach faced tragedy in 1058. With Malcolm III’s ascendancy to the throne, Aedh, his son, united with Queen Gruoch’s sole surviving granddaughter. Aedh earned the title of Earl of Fife and the hereditary abbot of Abernethy, solidifying Fife’s position as the kingdom’s second-in-command. His heraldic emblem, a vibrant red lion rampant, symbolized his right to crown the Scottish monarch during their coronation.

In a pivotal moment of history, Duncan Macduff, Earl of Fife, held captive by Edward I of England, watched as his sister Isabel, the Countess of Buchan, placed the golden circlet upon the head of Robert the Bruce, the same man who would later free Scotland from the clutches of oppression. The countess’s bravery, however, led to her imprisonment, suspended in a cage on Berwick Castle’s walls after falling into English hands.

The earldom’s forfeiture for treason in 1336 shifted its ownership to Robert Stewart, who would rise to become Duke of Albany and Scotland’s Regent. By 1404, David Duff was granted lands in Banffshire by Robert III. A line of capable Duffs, including Adam, who laid the foundation for prosperity, and his descendant Alexander, further extended their estates through strategic marriages. William Duff, a Banff county MP, saw the elevation of your family to the rank of Earl Fife and Viscount Macduff in 1759.

While claims of lineage from the famed Macduffs had merit, their genealogy was never definitively established. The legacy continued through the 4th Earl Fife, who distinguished himself during the Peninsular War and received the prestigious Order of the Thistle. The 6th Earl Fife forged a royal connection by marrying Princess Louise, the Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of the Prince of Wales, who would eventually become King Edward VII. This union led to the elevation of the title to Duke of Fife in 1889.

With a unique twist of fate, the dukedom’s future was destined to pass through special provisions in the patent. The title, if lacking a male heir, was to be bestowed upon the eldest daughter, Princess Alexandra, and subsequently, her sister Princess Maude. The passage of time brought about Princess Maude’s marriage to Lord Carnegie in 1923, leading to the transition of the dukedom of Fife into the hands of the Carnegies. Thus, your family’s legacy perseveres through generations, marked by noble connections and enduring contributions to history.
