Tennant Family History & Ancestry

Family Crest Motto: PLENA DABIT DEUS VELA (God will generously fill the sails)

Allow me to unfold the tale of your family’s history, the Tennants, a name rooted in the Latin word ‘tenere’, meaning ‘to hold’. Your family’s legacy was first etched into records in 1296, when ‘William Tennant of Crestone in the County of Linlescu’ marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. Through the pages of time, the Tennant name held a significant presence, its threads intricately woven through history’s tapestry.

In 1309, a figure named Thomas Teneunt stepped onto the stage of history as a witness in the inquiry concerning the Knights Templar. The annals of time also echo the name of John Tennand, a Stirling burgess who, in 1366, joined others in a spirited protest against the fishings of the Abbey of Cambuskenneth. The seal of Mungo Tennent, a Burgess of Edinburgh, imprinted on a deed of 1542, bears symbols that resonate with the arms of the chiefly family, Tennant of that Ilk, immortalized in the seventeenth-century Balfour manuscript.

As the fifteenth century unfolded, a branch of the Tennant family found their home in Ayrshire, crafting their lives from the land’s bounty. John ‘Auld Glen’ Tennant, who departed in 1810, shared a cherished bond with the poet Robert Burns, who in 1786 penned verses celebrating Tennant and his clan of sixteen children. Among them, Charles emerged as a beacon of innovation, channeling his energies into revolutionizing fabric bleaching techniques. His breakthrough blend of chlorine and lime paved the way for the efficient bleaching of cloth. The St. Rollox factory, founded with his vision, blossomed into Europe’s largest chemical works by the 1840s, covering over 100 acres. The baton of leadership was gracefully passed to his son, John Tennant, who continued the legacy.

A luminary of the Victorian era, Sir Charles Tennant, born in 1823, carved his name among the greatest entrepreneurs of his time. His monumental family seat at Glen, nestled near Traquair in Peebleshire, stood as a testament to his prosperity. As wealth flowed, Sir Charles poured resources into constructing this grand abode. The story of social ascent continued when in 1911, Edward Priaulx Tennant, the son of Sir Charles, was elevated to the peerage as Baron Glenconner. The echo of the First World War resonates through your family’s history, as Edward Tennant, a War Poet, and twelve other young family members became casualties of the conflict. The legacy journeyed forward with Colin Tennant, third Baron Glenconner, who left his mark through the development of the Caribbean island of Mustique and his close bond with Princess Margaret.

Today, the Tennant name stands as a testament to enduring legacy and remarkable achievement. Your family’s journey, from humble beginnings to prosperous heights, has been etched into the annals of history, leaving a positive and indelible mark for generations to come.
