Seton Family History & Ancestry

Family Crest Motto: AZARD YET FORWARD ON (whatever the risk, push forward)

Your family, the Setons, hold a rich history that stretches back to the Normans and has left a lasting impact on Scotland’s political landscape from the twelfth to the early eighteenth centuries. The legacy began with Philip de Setoune, your ancestor, who secured a charter during the reign of William the Lion, confirming his ownership of the Lothian lands of Seton, Winton, and Winchburgh. The name Seton originates from these lands, signifying ‘homestead by the sea’.

A pivotal figure in your family’s history is Sir Alexander Seton, whose loyalty to Scottish independence was steadfast, even as he became a trusted confidant of King Robert I. It was his intelligence that provided crucial information to King Robert I on the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn. His name also graces the Declaration of Arbroath, a historic letter asserting Scotland’s sovereignty sent to the Papacy. Following his legacy, Seton’s descendants carried on the noble tradition and were eventually titled Lords Seton.

Throughout the centuries, your family’s devotion to their country remained unwavering. George, the third lord, met his end alongside King James IV at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Your family’s support for Mary, Queen of Scots, is particularly noteworthy. The fifth lord played an integral role in the events surrounding the queen’s marriage to the Dauphin of France and provided invaluable assistance during critical moments, such as the night of David Rizzio’s murder.

In the face of challenges, your family’s resilience shone through. The Setons of Abercorn, another branch of your family, were bestowed with the title of Baronets of Nova Scotia in 1663. The Winton lineage carried the title of Earl of Winton, though a Jacobite stance led to the forfeiture of the title due to their support for different causes.

The memory of your family is preserved in the places associated with your history. Port Seton, Seton Collegiate Church, and Seton House still stand proudly along the coastal landscape south of Edinburgh, serving as enduring reminders of the legacy your family has left behind. Your family’s story is one of dedication, courage, and unwavering loyalty to Scotland, and it continues to inspire admiration and respect to this day.
